Greenways

Pennsy Trail Grand Opening

The much-anticipated first stretch of the Pennsy Trail is now complete! The Grand Opening and Dedication of the first phase was held on Saturday, September 26, 2009. Indy Parks received a $900,000 grant to construct this portion of the Pennsy Trail project on the City's Eastside as part of Gov. Mitch Daniels' $19 million trail initiative for the State of Indiana. This 1.2 miles portion of the trail corridor is between Arlington Avenue and Shortridge Road and utilizes the existing infrastructure of the Shadeland Avenue rail bridge overpass.

Why are Greenways so important to our city?

  • Recreation and fitness opportunities
  • Protection of wildlife habitat, promote open space and wetland conservation
  • Connectivity, linking neighborhoods with each other, parks and other community assets
  • Economic development

IPF continues to seek funding to complete the remaining 5.0 miles of the Pennsy Trail in Marion County. Completing the remaining 5.0 miles of trail will connect the Pennsy Trail into the current Indy Parks Greenway system on the west and to the east the trail will connect to the planned Cumberland Pennsy Trail.
